Driveshaft work built around the complete assembly

A driveshaft has to fit the application, run true, and work as a complete assembly. Schmelzle MechFab inspects the shaft and its components, looks for visible wear or damage, and evaluates the repair or fabrication work the assembly requires.

Inspection and repair

Evaluation can include the tube, welds, slip and end-yoke condition, U-joints, and carrier bearing where applicable. The goal is to understand the assembly before recommending component replacement, straightening, re-tubing, or another shop process.

Dynamic balancing

Dynamic balancing evaluates the rotating driveshaft assembly on dedicated equipment. It is part of producing a shaft that runs as intended after repair, dimensional changes, or fabrication—not a substitute for correcting worn or damaged components.

Shortening, lengthening, and re-tubing

Drivetrain swaps, suspension changes, restorations, and custom builds can require a different driveshaft length or construction. The shop can shorten or lengthen driveshafts, re-tube assemblies, and straighten shafts when their condition and construction make that appropriate. Confirm the required measuring procedure with the shop before ordering custom-length work.

One-piece and two-piece driveshafts

Schmelzle MechFab works with one-piece and two-piece assemblies, including configurations that use a carrier bearing. Steel and aluminum driveshafts are evaluated according to the material, condition, dimensions, components, and intended use.

Aluminum driveshaft fabrication and modification

Schmelzle MechFab is one of the few shops in the area equipped to modify and custom-build aluminum driveshafts. Work can include length modification where appropriate, component replacement or fabrication, aluminum welding, and dynamic balancing. Each shaft is evaluated for its construction, condition, dimensions, and application.

Yokes, U-joints, and carrier bearings

A shaft is only one part of the driveline assembly. Worn U-joints, damaged or unsuitable yokes, and carrier-bearing issues can affect fit and operation. Component needs are considered with the complete shaft rather than treated as an unrelated parts swap.
